I will be leaving for home in a few days, after a near 6 month adventure here at French Woods, and i am happy to say that the Skatepark project has come to a sucessful completed end. With the Bowl done a few days ago to solidify a full park completion before I leave, and me having a effective and awesome skate instruction staff this summer, this has been nothing but a perfect ending to my journey. The kids were great, the Skills were nothing but top notch. The Beginners progressed with Style. I am almost in a bit of a haze trying to even think of words to describe things.

Obviously, I created this park for the KIDS, the campers that, with out them, i would have no reason to be here... and its done..  and i want to thank EVERYBODY involved that was part of making this happen; Louie, Quinn, Dave, Steve, Innocent, Tom, Three other guys that i dont remember their name, Gregg, Jackie, and Lisa.

ALL of u guys contributed to this project, and you all were part of making it a reality, Thank you

I also would like to thank the friends i made here this year.. you all hands down, blew away the staff of last year, no matter what departments u were hired to be in.  To my full time skate staff, Steve, Josh and Balazs, thanks to you guys we had eyes on every corner of that park to keep it safe.. and it helped FWF have a second consecutive year under my running of NO broken bones for the campers/outside staff.
And thank you to my supporting staff by titles of Supers and CIT's: Josh, Zynep, and Alex....and lastly, HUGH shout-outs to the other staff that kept the park happy and joyfull with ur presence each day, such as Samson (we all now know ur first name is Andrew, not Samson lol), Martin, Fraser, Timothy, Sarah, and dearest Elizabeth.

Here is also a link to the video tour of the completed project as well: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0k5ICL7h72U

And now without further adieu, I present to you the Revolution/FWF Skatepark of 2009:

The Bowl is done, completed, final.. and I have to thank Dave and Tom who worked their tails off each day without complaint, ignoring the sweat that poured off their bodies, and rocked out a KILLER Bowl that was ready for the kids to skate the day before Camp ended.

And a fyi, Tom, who is from Hungary, never touched a construction project probablly in his life, DEFINATLY not a Skatepark project, i know that for a fact, and at the end of this build, i can safely say he is now a Skateboard Ramp Builder.

When the last screw was put into this bowl, it became a glorious day, as the skatepark officialy, was a completion. And in the next entry after this one, you will see the completed project in its entirity.

So hey.. heres The bowl:

Hello eveybody, i have to admit that i should have made this update about a 4 days ago, but after i loaded the pics on my hard drive, i got distracted with somehting and forgot to continue working on the update process. but here it is..

The final layer process of the bowl is coming along very smoothly. and i expect the interior of the bowl to be completed within the week. just in time for the campers of this final session to have a chance to ride it.

I may have to stay behind a few days after camp is finished to finish up the final layer decking but no more than a few days tops. But, for the campers, I will open it immediatly once the inside of the bowl is done.

Here is a pic of the process as it was about 4 days ago.

It's time for another update!

First off, for all those people out there, campers, staff,, MANAGEMENT, and the none of the "above" ... to answer ur never ending redundant question as to when the bowl will be finished... here is ur answer.. asi say it again.. ....................IT WILL BE DONE WHEN IT'S DONE! I will not promise by the end of summer, because i cant. this is the most complicated ramp to build for this project and nearly EVERY piece of wood has to be custom cut to size.. no other piece is alike... so this is very time consuming.

Now that we have that out of the way, ..on to the BOWL update!... some weeks later, we now have the first two prep sheeting layers done within the bowl, as well as the spider webbed framed decking.

from the point foward, we have to re connect the cornder coping pipe all back together to make one endless loop, sheet the top decking with 3/4 inch plywood, the put the final layer sheeting on the whole damn thing... cant say im looking foward to that last part, but it is what it is.

so heres a pic of what it presently looks like, and ill hit u guys up with another update hopefully soon. take care!

Hello everybody! its been about 5 weeks since i posted anything on here, and i think its time to give you all an update.

First off, camp is going GREAT, the new skatepark is a great and wonderful sucess.

Secondly, my skateboard sponsor "Revolution Skateboards" has sponsored the skatepark, donated 20 Carbon Fiber Revdeck's to the camp and the park is now going to be known as "Revolution Skatepark" ... if you want info on this company and information on the boards they manufacture, go to www.revdeck.com .

ok.. lets talk BOWL... its been underway in construction for a couple weeks now, and i thought i would hold back on giving small updates in the beginning, and instead throw at u all three pics in one entry now so theres a nice impact on how its been going.

some information for you.. the Bowl shape is that of a standard kidney shaped swimming pool, its 6 feet tall all the way around, and the transitions are identical to the 6 foot tall Street Course.

So here u go, three stages of the bowl.. from empty space to full on framing.

as another big change happends, i will post another entry so keep on the look out, or pay attention to my facebook status's when i advertize an update. www.facebook.com/alexander.azzi

enjoy!

The last screw was fastened down today...

The New Frenchwoods Skatepark is done as it is for now. The Bowl will be started and completed by summers end on a more part time work basis.

The Mini Ramp, The Vert Ramp, The Street Course, The Beginner Area are now 100% skateable and will be open for the start of the 2009 Summer Camp Season.

It is now time to sign off for a while as we work on the odds and ends, fences, locks, clean up, and arranging the old school area and get started for the summer camp opening. I will continue this live journal as the construction of the Bowl starts as well as the final complete 100% full park photo when the bowl is done. I will announce any new entries on my facebook page: www.facebook.com/profile.php .

Until then, I thank you all for visiting my journal up to this point and look foward to having u back again soon.

So it has begun, the the process and very redundant task of laying down the final surface on all of the ramps (bowl pending).. it took one day and a quick morning yesterday to get the 3 foot Mini Ramp done, and it rides beautifuly.

there wont be much to say in the journal for the next week or so a s the pics will speak for themselves.

Currently we are a little over halfway done the Vert Ramp, that update will arrive soon.

Greetings everyone! I know it has been some time since my last entry but for good reason; i wanted to let some progress of various things are were doing build up to completion so i could focus one full entry here on a very important subject, a HUGE subject for that matter..

-Safety within the park-

Ramps are great fun.. but without safety in mind they can be even more dangerous than they already can be..  railings, stairs and safety walls were the priority of this past week and we accomplished it all.. and also started and finished the Chill Area too, so skaters can take a breather and not be in the way of other skating activity, and got the other side of the Street Course Area joined up and prep sheeted.

Also this week i filmed a short video of the progress of the skatepark to allow people that are interested to take a walkthrough of the park at its current state.

I could go on and on, but today i am gonna let the pics and video do the talking.

Today me and Dave (one of the workers) got creative and  within 1 days time, turned the back of one of the ends the 10 foot Vert Ramp into a "walk-in closet" of epic proportions (Girls, you have my permission to be jealous). We created a 3 section open chambered storage area so massive that Mr. Beans Mini could probably fit inside it.

3/4 inch thick walls with three identical doors all equipped with doorknobs and  keylocks. No, this is not a prize revealing structure for a cheesy gameshow, this is a storage area that was built to withstand the test of time.

Tomorrow we will start working on the "Chill Out Area" that will be located behind the other end of the Vert Ramp.

A pic of the Vert Ramp Storage Area:

Its a Tuesday evening approaching and the day of work is done. Over the past few days there has been some great progress.

All the corner transitions for the 6 foot Bowl have finally arrived so now we have everyhting needed to get the bowl started. I have decided though, that it would be best to get everything we have already started 100% done first so the park has a garunteed opening for the start of camp this 2009 season. Then as the first session is underway, the Bowl can be finished up while the campers enjoy the rest of the park..

In other news, up to this point since the last entry, we have gotten all the metal edging done for the Street Course "middle obstical area" , the coping welded into place for the Street Course, the 3 foot Mini Ramp, and the 10 foot tall Vert Ramp. It looks fantastic!.. which is rare to say in regards to a bunch of 2 inch diameter steep piping.

After the coping was in place we were finally able to screw down the decks on the tops of the ramps so they are able to be stood on.

So that is the current update. Tomorrow we will get a clever 3 chamber storage area built and also get the Chill Out area deck started.

Also this week, hopefully, now that we got all the wood needed for the entire park (give or take a few items) we will be able to set in place the last two sections of the Street Course that have been left unfinished due to their location and the convienience of getting a forklift in and out when it was needed.

Here are the pics of the past few days of work.

No pictures today, but thought I would update you on what has been going on.

Today the coping pipe for the Vert Ramp, the Mini Ramp, and Street Course were all cut to size, and are ready for installation. We are just waiting for the fastener plates to be delievered so we can weld them to the coping and screw securly to the ramps.

Also today the Bowl coping pipes arrived pre rolled (bent) to fit the curved corners of the ramp. Also arrived today was two big 2 thousand pound crates filled with the rest of the Bowl materials to make the curved transitions.  Now the Bowl framing can start asap.

Tomorrow we will start fastening down the steel edging on the street course, and mini ramp. This edging will help protect the ramps outer edges from wear and tear for many years to come.

14 April 2009 @ 04:46 pm

Today was a "Start a project and finish it the same day" day.

We swerved our attention over to the Beginner Area today that is located to the right of the Street Course immediately as u walk into the entrance of the building. Between the morning start until lunchtime, we had the framing started and complete, and after lunch, we threw down the flooring layer and got that fastened down completly.  By the end of the day today we walked out of the skatepark build site with a completed Beginner Area (minus the skatelayer sheeting). It was a very good day.

The only framing left to do is the Bowl that will be next to the Street Course (on the left) and the Chillout Deck that will sit behind the 10 foot Vert Ramp.
This should be started soon this week (the rest of the bowl material delivery pending). Until then, we can start focusing on getting the coping pipes cut and set in place on the ramps we have standing so far, and the metal edging that will protect the edges of the ramps so skaters don't shred them up over time.

And we are back... to the 10 foot tall monster known as the Vert Ramp...  both "prep" layers have been fastened down, and she is a beauty... It is one sight to see when it is in its skeletal framed form... but to grasp its true size, the sheeting makes this ramp even more massive.  It took over 70 sheets of plywood, and over 3500 screws to get this part of the ramp done. But with a great team of workers, we got this all accomplished in only 2 days time.

To all you experienced skateboarding campers attending this summer, you better be ready with focus and true skateboard commitment on this baby!

Work will pick up on Monday. Until then, have a Happy Easter everyone!

atroa

Today started out with a nice freezing temperature, and a thin bed of snow on the ground... but without twitching an eye to it, the work continued.  Today we got one full half of the giant Street Course's 2 "prep" surface layers completed. And naturally we will continue on the other half tomrrow. ..I did say in yesterdays entry that we would tackle the Vert Ramp, but this morning we realized that the lumber company never delivered the 1/2 inch thick plywood that this particular ramp needs. So we decided to pay attention to the Street Course for now.

Not to much else to say in tihs entry except it was a good day, and the positive vibes and momentum continues.

For those who have never seen snow touch the property of Frenchwoods summer camp before.. here you go.

atroa

While we are awaiting some material delivered from various sources, we have begun to start some surfacing.

Today we went back to the "Beginning" and got both "prep" surface layers screwed on to the 3 Foot Mini Ramp.  Unfortunatly we had to stop there for now cause we need coping plates attach the coping via weld, but no biggie, theres always other stuff to do while we wait. Once the coping is put on we can then finish the deck surfacing. Finally all that will be left  for this ramp will be the final skate surface/side edging that will be screwed down at the end of the project.

Now for a little suprise;  Between the 10 Foot Vert Ramp and the back wall (not including the old weight room addition) there is about 25 or so feet X 56 or so feet of unused space.  I was able to get the green light to use this unused space for the skatepark...  now with that said, I will be putting some of the street ramps from the OLD park in that area as a kind of nostalgic "Old School/Back In The Day" skate area, where return campers and first timers can enjoy some of the obsticals from the old skatepark we used to have.  My idea is to give this section a Alleyway/Urban Jungle inspired theme to keep the feel of the old style park.

Ok well thats it for now. Tomorrow we will tackle the surface of the 10 Foot Vert Ramp.

atroa

Today was an eventful day, the Street Course framing is as finished as it can get..  meaning.. we are going to hold off on the transition framing that is closest to the entrance wall in the front of the building because if we got it all framed and joined up with the rest of the Street Course then we would not be able to get in and out with the forklifts and get delivered wood in. So chances are this will be the last thing we frame and join together.

So as we wait for the rest of the Bowl material to be delievered, most likely we will get going on the Beginner Area, or maybe even start layering the first layer of plywood on the Mini Ramp, and or Vert Ramp tomorrow.

here is the pic of the day; the Street Course, minus the transition on the right side.

Time to walk away from the Vert Ramp for a while until its time to start throwing the surface down, the entire frame is 100% completed now that we installed the top decking and bracing on both sides.

After lunch we started working on the Street Course, we decided to start working on the obstacles in the middle first, we cut and framed up the Launch Ramp, the Stairs, and the Step-Up Ramp.

Tomorrow we will be continuing on the Street Course by getting the rest of the mid section framed up, including the wedge ramps and middle tables.

Vert Ramp anyone? Today is friday and the framing of the 10 foot tall Vert Ramp is completed! I can't thank the buld team enough for working as hard and as focused as we are. It is no suprise, than in order to frame a ramp there is a lot of redundancey involved. A 3 foot mini is one thing, but a monster like this could drive a sane man insane, or an insane man sane..

Here is what 3 days (yes only three days) can accomplish when everyone is in foward focus (the top decking will be done on monday):

atroa

Its Tuesday March 24th, and I have an update on the progression on the Skatepark build..

yesterday, we got the framing of the 3 foot  tall, 16 foot wide mini ramp done from start to finish..  which in my opinion is unheard of to do in a day, especialy at 16 feet wide, but with the manpower i have here and the teamwork we have created, things have started out like a well oiled machine and i hope it continues that way.

This morning, we took the 3 foot mini ramps individual sections and  and joined them together as one, and leveled them.

After lunch we started working on getting the 10 foot Vert Ramps transitions put together, and within 3 hours we had ALL of the 12 transitions that will make the ramp 24 feet wide completed.

Tomorrow the vert ramps cross brace framing begins, and possibly, if theres time, get the flatbottom framing done as well.
